Kathleen-

I was only on Metformin and Avandia and my levels were similar to yours (and higher!). Went to see an endocrinologist and he put me on Lantus-the long acting basal insulin (once a day shot). My levels are now no higher than 150 or so after I eat and 70-100 before I eat. I am having problems with night time hypoglycemia but the diabetes educator wants me to take the insulin in the AM vs PM and cut out the Avandia to see if it will eliminate the lows. I feel soooooooooo much better on the insulin.

You are wise to be concerned about your current levels and the effect it may eventually have on your health.

Good luck.

Subject: Should I be taking insuling shots? (original question)

I take 2-avandia pills and l glybizide and my levels dont lower until i have done physical work. When I ride my excersize bike it goes down at least 40-50 points. Otherwise it stays high.

Does anyone know if my levels are like 180 -250 most of the time should I be taking isulin shots?

My dr. just has me on those pills but it often makes me wonder. I dont want to damage my body if im supposed to be on insulin with high levels and my dr. just isnt doing the right thing

Subject: Metformin concerns (response 1)

Kelly-

Take it from someone who despises taking medicines, the Metformin is one of the least harmful diabetes medicines and one of the most beneficial too. Main side effects have to do with stomach upset,etc...I have had this problem but I take the pills in the middle of my meal and take digestive enzymes and acidophilus religiously-this keeps the stomach problems away. There is also a side effect called lactic acidosis which is quite serious but apparently it is quite rare.

I wish a doctor had suggested I take Metformin several years ago-I think it would have delayed my progressions towards developing diabetes.

Kelly,

I just wanted to say that I have been taking Metformin for about one year now and so far I have no adverse side affects. I have managed to reduce my glucose level by one half. I have lost weight, increased my physical activity (though I need to do more!) and faithfully taken my meds and followed up with medical care. This is important to me because not so long ago I lost my older brother to heart disease. His first diagnosis was diabetes! Take it one day at a time, a few less carbs today, a few more steps around the house, even standing more often helps! Dont worry Kelly you can do this!

Best Regards,

Meg

I am terrified about taking 250mg of metformin. What will happen if I take it? Side effects?

Hello all, I am a 33 year old female with tpye 2. I was on Metformin 500mg-1000mg since April 06, I have had some side effects and now have lactic acid build up. How do you get rid of this? No longer on meds to see what happens on next A1c.
